What Happened in Butler

The July attack involved 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, who fired at the former president and struck his upper right ear. One attendee, Corey Comperatore, was killed during the incident. Crooks was shot and killed by a counter-sniper team. In November 2025 the FBI concluded Crooks acted alone after interviewing multiple witnesses and individuals.

Aftermath and Ongoing Tension

Officials including then-FBI Director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino said they briefed the president and found no cover-up. Two months later Ryan Wesley Routh was stopped at a West Palm Beach course after setting up what was described as a 'sniper's nest' and has since been sentenced to life. Another alleged attempt involving Cole Tomas Allen occurred later. The back-and-forth between Carlson and Trump continued, with Trump calling Carlson a 'Low IQ person' on April 17 and Carlson expressing remorse for his earlier support.
